MÜRITZ NATIONAL PARK
Nature in all its splendor.
Discover the diversity, beauty and uniqueness of Germany's largest national park.
The Müritz National Park is an impressive nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania that extends over an area of around 322 square kilometers, making it Germany's largest national park. Named after Lake “Müritz”, the largest inland lake in Germany, the national park was founded in 1990. 107 lakes with a size of over 10,000 square meters are located in the Müritz National Park. In the east of the Müritz National Park, old beeches, the Serrahn beeches, have survived for many years. This ancient beech forest is a treasure and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011.
The national park is characterized by a varied landscape, characterized by extensive forests, picturesque lakes, moors, meadows and rivers. This diversity creates a unique ecosystem and provides habitat for a wide range of plant and animal species.
The Müritz National Park covers a significant part of the Müritz. This impressive inland lake covers an area of approximately 117 square kilometers and forms the center of the national park. The lake is not only an important habitat for waterfowl, but also offers numerous recreational opportunities such as boating and fishing.
A central feature of the national park is the natural development of the landscape. Here natural processes are allowed to unfold largely without human intervention, resulting in a unique wilderness. This approach helps protect biological diversity and maintain ecological connections.
The Müritz National Park is home to an impressive variety of animal species, including red deer, roe deer, wild boar, otters, sea eagles and many others. Bird lovers can observe numerous waterfowl that populate the lakes and wetlands.
To provide visitors with a sustainable and informative experience, the national park has visitor centers and well-marked hiking trails. These allow guests to enjoy the beauty of nature while being made aware of the importance of nature conservation.
The Müritz National Park is therefore not only a paradise for nature lovers, but also an important protected area for the preservation of biological diversity in the region. It offers the opportunity to experience untouched nature in all its splendor while promoting an understanding of the need for nature conservation.
